Dorians was founded in 1937. This set is from the first ever Dorians ball held on January 14, 1938 at the Municipal Auditorium.
Visit The Historic New Orleans Collective to see costumes from the ball.

Writing on the back says “Rocky Pass” and "DOR 39." We think this set is from the Dorians 1939 ball, however the description from the news article describing the ball doesn't seem to match this scenery. The ball was held at the Municipal Auditorium on January 27, 1939.
We have 3 pieces:
Center 30' by 44' | Wings 27' by 11'
Writing on the back also says “Momus 27” and “Athenians 28," however the themes and descriptions of those balls do not match this style. The 1925 Atlanteans ball was held at the Athenaeum on February 17
Each side measures 30' by 22' | Combined they measure 30' by 44'
This backdrop was also used for the 1947 Nereus ball with the theme "A Pirate’s Masquerade." See program details for the 1947 ball here. Both balls were held at the Municipal Auditorium, first on January 26, 1939 and then January 23, 1947.

This set was presumably used by both Mithras and Noblads in 1941. The theme for Noblads was "Precious Stones" and was held at the Jerusalem Temple on January 11, 1941. The theme for Mithras was "Mithras Finds the Crystal Palace and was held at the Municipal Auditorium on February 13, 1941.

This is the only backdrop we have of what was presumably a set. It is very delicate due to the gauze fabric between the trees.
Measures 27’ by 44’
This set is also marked "E of O 1940" and “Mithras 42.” The 1940 Elves of Oberon theme does not match the backdrops, so we presume these backdrops were painted on top of an existing design. We don't think that this set could have been used for Mithras 1942 since Mithras didn't have any balls from 1942-1945 due to WWII.
